Getting Started
10 questions
Who can work with Total Lifetime?
We work with independent agents and agencies at every stage: experienced Medicare agents, agents adding Medicare to P&C, benefits, financial or CPA practices, agencies with several producers, and licensed agents who are new to Medicare.
Already have a book? We are not expecting you to start over. The conversation begins with the business you have today and where you want to take it.
How do I get started, and how fast does contracting happen?
If you are ready, you do not have to schedule a call first. Complete your contracting profile and we submit it right away. Contracting forms typically reach you within one business day, and we track it through to completion. Once your application is submitted, most carriers appoint you within 48 to 72 hours. A few take longer, and carriers that run an extra background check can take 7 to 8 business days.
Do I have to recruit other agents?
No. If you are an individual agent, there is no downline, no recruiting expectation and no buy-in. You write business and we support you. Agencies are different: to operate as a general agency managing independent agents, you need at least five active agents, and the agency itself must also be writing business.
What if it is not a fit?
If someone does not want to work with us, we do not want to work with them. You can ask for a release at any time, even before you are contracted, and we grant it right away. It is an open release at the carrier level, so your contracts move with you.
Can I talk with someone first?
Absolutely. Schedule a time to ask about your existing contracts, carriers, your agency, or whether we are the right fit. No obligation to start contracting and no decision needed on the call.
I am a captive or career agent. Can I talk it through first?
Yes. Bring your current agreement to the call and we will talk through what you are looking at. Check any non-solicit terms with your own attorney before you make a move.
I am new to Medicare. Can you help me get started, and do you give leads?
Yes. Start with a conversation. We walk you through certification, contracting and your first enrollments, and our training covers what comes next. You do the work, and you will not be figuring it out alone.
Yes, leads are available. Through our marketing partner, contracted agents can opt into a free turning-65 direct-mail lead program for their counties, and co-op marketing funds are available on an agent or agency basis. We will also show you how to work turning-65 outreach yourself. Be careful with anyone who promises leads will do the selling for you; they will not.
What training and support do I get?
You go through our Medicare Mastery Training one-on-one, by Zoom, or in person, through the certification process. After that, support does not end when the contract is signed: compliance, contracting, technology and the day-to-day questions that come with building a Medicare book.
Knowing Medicare is only half of a practice. We also help you become visible in your community, so the people you can help know you are there.
Can I do this part-time, or just service my own clients?
Tell us what you want to do and we will tell you honestly whether it fits. Part-time agents are welcome, and so are agents who mostly want to take care of the clients they already have. There is no fee either way.
Do you work with agents who serve Spanish-speaking clients?
Yes. While we do not speak Spanish ourselves, agents who do, and who need an upline, are welcome. We will work with you on contracting, training and compliance in a way that fits your clients.
Your Clients and Carriers
5 questions
Do I keep my client book?
Yes. You own your client book, and working with Total Lifetime does not change that. Our role is to help you support and grow it, not take it away.
Before any contracting change is made, we explain how it affects your existing business. Questions about a particular carrier or block of business? Ask us first.
Can I keep my other carriers and contracts?
Yes. You do not have to move your existing Medicare contracts. We look at your current contracting and where we may be able to help, and the first step does not have to be tearing apart what already works.
Which carriers can I contract with?
We have access to 120+ carriers, national, regional and local, and the list keeps growing. Availability depends on your state, licensing and existing contracts. Examples include UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Wellcare, Devoted Health, Cigna, Mutual of Omaha, Physicians Mutual, Medical Mutual of Ohio, CareSource, Highmark, UPMC, MediGold, AultCare, The Health Plan, SCAN, Wellabe/Medico, Bankers Fidelity, Foresters, Aflac and Ameritas. Most agents start with the top 5 carriers in their area and add more once approved. Do not see a carrier you want? Ask us and we will find out what is possible.
I run an agency. How do you work with agencies, and will you go after my agents or clients?
We work with agencies as agencies, not as a pile of individual producers. We start by understanding how your agency operates and where you want to take it, then help with contracting, onboarding, training, compliance, technology and marketing.
We have no interest in taking your clients, and we do not contact your agents about moving unless you ask us to. You will talk with us directly.
To operate as a general agency managing independent agents, you need at least five active agents, and the agency itself must also be writing business. When an agency has license-only agents under it, the agency receives the full commission and decides how to pay those agents. The five-agent requirement applies only to general agencies, never to individual agents.
I am licensed in a state or territory that is not on your list. Can I still work with you?
Yes. The 21 states on our list are where we are licensed today, and we add states and U.S. territories on request, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tell us on a call or in your contracting profile and we will take it from there.
Money Matters
6 questions
Does it cost me anything to work with Total Lifetime?
No. Working with us does not reduce your commission and does not add a fee. Our override is built into the commission structure carriers already pay under CMS guidelines, so it does not come out of your pocket.
We never upsell you. No paid platforms, no courses to buy. Anything we offer you, from marketing materials to branded gear, is at our cost. We do not make a nickel on what you spend. Some organizations make part of their income selling their own agents the newest platform or program. We do not. You are not our customer. You are our partner.
Agents are contracted at street level or above. Agencies receive the maximum level available for their size and production. Levels vary by carrier and by state, and you see each carrier’s schedule during contracting.
What does certification cost?
Agents complete annual certification through AHIP or NABIP. Through our discount, AHIP is $125 and NABIP is $100. Prices can change, and we will confirm current costs on your call.
How and when do I get paid?
In almost all cases, you are paid directly by the carrier once you are contracted. You receive each carrier’s commission schedule during contracting, before you sign anything. Medicare Advantage commission is paid ahead in the first year, as explained under first-year payments and chargebacks. If a carrier prefers to pay through the agency, we pay you directly. With several carriers you get a payment from each one, which is normal in this business.
Compensation details are shared in a one-on-one conversation.
Do I need my own E&O coverage?
Yes. Every agent carries their own errors and omissions coverage.
Is there a production minimum?
Most carriers set one, to show you are still actively working the business. The amount varies by carrier, and we will go over each one on your call. Many carriers also offer a different contract for agents who are maintaining an existing book rather than selling new business.
How do first-year payments and chargebacks work?
Medicare Advantage commission rules follow CMS. In the first year you are paid ahead. If a plan takes effect July 1, for example, you receive the commission for the rest of that year about 30 days later. If the client is new to Medicare, or new to a Medicare Advantage plan, a first-year true-up follows, bringing that first year to a full year of commission.
After the first year, you are paid monthly, one twelfth of the annual amount at the rate in effect for that plan year. CMS can change rates each year. If a client leaves during the plan year, the commission paid ahead for the months no longer in force is charged back, and payments stop.
